This weeks blog is about giving and receiving compliments … I have been thinking about how my dad used to say to me when I was given a compliment – ‘Just say thank you’ and receive it graciously.
It is something that I’ve notice a lot of people have trouble with.
Have you ever given a compliment to a friend and they said ‘Oh no, this old thing!’ or ‘It’s not that great.’
It takes the wind out of your sails and makes you feel like your gift of love to them was not worth anything. Right?
When someone gives you a compliment it gives them great joy to do it … they are not only doing it to make you feel good but they make themselves feel good too … and it is important for us to receive it to balance out the giving energy.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that some people feel the need to give a compliment right back in the moment … and it is not always sincere.
For example: ‘I love that new haircut!’ … ‘Oh … I love yours too.’ …. what?
It doesn’t make sense to respond like this. And people will be less inclined to do it again. (*Unless, of course, they were fishing for a compliment on their own hair and they knew you would do say that … but that is a whole other kettle of fish … sneaky reverse compliment psychology stuff. ha ha)
Anyway, my point is … compliments with genuine intentions are GREAT!!
Give them freely and receive them with joyous abandon.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
